The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 17 chairmanship seats and 176 of the 178 councillorship positions in the Yobe State local government elections held across the state on Saturday.
The results were announced on Sunday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, by the Chairman of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC), Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani.
Yabani said the election was conducted across the state’s 17 local government areas and 178 electoral wards, with 10 political parties taking part in the exercise.
According to the electoral commission, the APC secured all the available chairmanship positions, while two opposition parties won one councillorship seat each.
“Out of the 178 councillorship seats, the APC won 176 seats, while APP won in Fune and ADP in Karasuwa,” Yabani declared while announcing the final results.
The outcome means the APC maintained its control of all 17 local government chairmanship positions in Yobe, while opposition parties managed to secure representation at the councillorship level in two wards.
Yabani explained that the councillorship results were declared at the respective ward collation centres, after which the chairmanship results were announced at the local government collation centres. The final results were subsequently collated at the commission’s headquarters in Damaturu.
The YOSIEC chairman said the electoral process had been in the works since April 23, 2025, when the commission began preparations under his predecessor, the late Dr Mamman Mohammed.
Before the announcement, the commission observed a minute of silence in honour of Mohammed, who died before the conclusion of the electoral process.
The election had been preceded by weeks of preparations by YOSIEC, including the screening of candidates and training of electoral officers. The commission had earlier said the election would be conducted across the 17 local government areas and 178 wards.
The results announced in Yobe come against the backdrop of other recent local government elections in the country where governing parties have recorded sweeping victories.
In Anambra State, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won all 21 chairmanship positions and all councillorship seats in the August 29, 2026 local government election, according to the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC).
The commission said APGA candidates emerged victorious in all 21 local government areas and across the state’s 362 electoral wards. The Young Progressives Party (YPP), which was the only opposition party to field candidates, participated only in Anambra East.
However, the YPP disputed the account of the election in Anambra East, alleging that its agents and supporters were prevented from participating and that violence occurred in parts of the local government. The party alleged that gunshots were heard and that one of its female members was injured.
The Yobe election has, however, received acceptance from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state.
Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Damaturu, the Yobe IPAC Chairman, Comrade Umar Adamu Jajere, said the council accepted the results on behalf of the political parties in the state.
“On behalf of the entire leadership and membership of IPAC, comprising all registered political parties in Yobe State, I proudly declare our acceptance of the outcome. We say unequivocally that the elections were free, fair, credible and very successful,” Jajere said.
He praised Yabani and the YOSIEC team for their preparations for the election, particularly the distribution of electoral materials, accreditation of voters and transmission of results.
Jajere also said the results demonstrated that political parties other than the APC were able to secure seats at the grassroots level.
“This outcome is a testament to the fact that our democracy is maturing. The fact that multiple parties secured councillorship seats shows that the electorate are discerning and that no single party has a monopoly over the hearts and minds of our people,” he said.
He also commended the political parties for what he described as maturity throughout the campaign and voting periods.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigerian Army, were also praised for their role during the exercise.
Jajere said their conduct helped create an environment in which voters could participate in the election, while also commending Governor Mai Mala Buni for providing logistical and other support to YOSIEC.
“This is the hallmark of a true democrat. You resisted the temptation to interfere and allowed the will of the people to prevail,” he said.
The IPAC chairman urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors from the APC, APP and ADP to approach their mandates as responsibilities to the people at the grassroots.
He called on the winners to be magnanimous in victory and encouraged candidates who lost the election to remain committed to democratic participation.
The APC’s dominance in Yobe’s local elections is not entirely new. In the 2024 local government election, YOSIEC also declared the party winner of all 17 chairmanship seats and all 178 councillorship positions.
