2027: Group Petitions INEC, Demands Ajagunla’s Removal As PDP Candidate For Osun Central

A group, Osun Leadership Forum, has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the removal of Senator Fadeyi Oluwole Olubiyi, popularly known as Ajagunla, as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District in the 2027 election.

In a letter dated October 2, 2026, and signed by its solicitor, Adewale Adegoke Esq. of Wale Adegoke & Partners (Motẹ́leọlá Chambers), the group alleged that Olubiyi’s emergence violated provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the PDP’s membership and primary election guidelines.

The petition was anchored on the circumstances surrounding Olubiyi’s defection between the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), his participation in the APC primary, and his subsequent return to the PDP after the party had already conducted its senatorial primary and produced another candidate.

The group further referenced the Supreme Court judgment in Appeal No. SC/CR/495/2026, INEC v. Zenith Labour Party, which it said reinforced statutory requirements on political party membership registers and eligibility to contest party primaries.

According to the petitioners, Olubiyi was not a member of the PDP when its primary was conducted.

The petitioners also said the senator’s name was not contained in the relevant membership register submitted to INEC, and the process through which he later emerged as candidate was not a fresh primary monitored by INEC as required by law.

The Osun Leadership Forum therefore urged INEC to de-recognise Olubiyi as the PDP candidate for Osun Central and remove his name from its 2027 list of candidates, citing alleged violations of the Electoral Act and the constitutional rights of members who participated in the earlier primary.

The group gave INEC 48 hours from receipt of the letter to act on its demand, warning that failure to do so would result in legal action against the Commission.

The development is expected to heighten political and legal tension in Osun Central ahead of the 2027 general election.
