Army expands nationwide operations with new military formation

A fresh Nigerian Army brigade and its attached battalions will settle in Rivers State to combat local security threats and guard pipelines.

Brigadier General Ismaila Sule, the Commander of the Nigerian Army 6 Division Garrison, shared details of the operational expansion during a visit to Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Sule, who also serves as Sector Three Commander of Operation Delta Safe, revealed that the military is expanding its structure from eight to twelve divisions across the country. As part of this expansion, a dedicated brigade together with its affiliated battalions will move into Ahoada in the coming days.

Protection for oil infrastructure and local communities

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara received the military delegation and welcomed the choice of Ahoada for the new formation, citing existing security difficulties in the area.

“I want to honestly appreciate the information you just gave to us, the new Brigade that is being created, and more especially the siting of that Brigade in the Ahoada axis, knowing fully well the prevalent challenges that we’re having from that area,” Fubara said.

The governor stated that joint work between state authorities and security agencies is necessary to safeguard human life, private assets, and critical oil infrastructure.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for choosing to expand military commands nationwide.

Fubara noted that previous state governments maintained good working ties with the military, promising that his administration will step up financial and operational backing for army personnel serving in the state.

“We are not going to relent or lower our level of support; rather, we will increase it to make sure that you succeed while you are serving the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large,” Fubara said.

State guarantees professional independence for troops

The governor clarified that official state support comes with no political conditions or requests that could compromise military standards.

Fubara assured the military hierarchy that his administration will never ask soldiers to perform actions outside their professional duties or use their power to oppress residents. He stressed that state cooperation aims strictly at preserving peace, development, and social progress.

Sule, who took command of the 6 Division Garrison on 30 September, explained that his visit aimed to formally introduce himself to the governor and acknowledge state assistance to army formations.

He promised that the military will work to preserve peace and public safety throughout Fubara’s term in office.
