Beyond the Cost: When Technology Becomes an Investment, Not an Expense Tayo Adelakun- Adekolme

Ask many Nigerian business owners about security technology and the first word that often comes up is “cost.”A cost to install.

A cost to maintain.Another line competing with salaries, rent, power and fuel. But that framing can miss an important part of the equation. The real question isn’t only what the technology costs.

It’s what operating without it could cost.Consider a single security incident.

Stock disappears, but there is no record of who accessed the area.A restricted facility is breached, and management has limited information about what happened.

An incident triggers an investigation that takes days or weeks, while operations are disrupted.A preventable loss becomes a police report, an insurance claim and a difficult conversation with a client.

And perhaps most importantly, confidence begins to disappear.None of these costs appears on the quotation for a lock or a fire alarm system. But they can appear very clearly in the aftermath of an incident.

This is why I believe Nigerian businesses should ask a different question:What does it cost us to keep operating without visibility, accountability and the information needed to make good decisions?

Technology should not be purchased simply because it is new.It should be evaluated as an investment — against the risks it reduces, the time it saves, the losses it can prevent and the continuity it helps protect.Take access control.A traditional key may appear inexpensive.

But what happens when keys are lost, access has to be changed, contractors need temporary permissions, or management needs to know who entered a restricted area and when? The cost isn’t necessarily in the key.The cost can be in everything around the key.

The same principle applies to fire detection, surveillance and facility technology.A fire detection system does not generate revenue.

Neither does a smart lock. But neither does insurance — until you need it.The value of these systems lies in what they help an organisation prevent, control, know and protect. This is the thinking behind Adekolme.

We are building an integrated technology solutions company focused on practical solutions for the Nigerian operating environment — bringing together access control, fire detection, surveillance and facility technology.

Our work with YeboTech is one part of that approach. Anticipatory Security.

Its smart access technology demonstrates how a physical security system can move beyond simply locking a door to providing controlled permissions, accountability and better management of access.

Ultimately, the question shouldn’t always be:“How much does this technology cost?”It should also be:“What does this technology protect, what inefficiency does it remove, and what could it cost us if we don’t have it?
”Because sometimes the cheapest option is not the one with the lowest price. It is the one that creates the least total cost over time.

Don’t only calculate the cost of technology. Calculate the cost of operating without it.
