Bottoms up! As the calendar turns to the 8th of October, friends, colleagues and admirers raise their glasses to Otunba Olufemi Salako, a man whose journey in journalism has been nothing short of remarkable.
Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, Salako has built a career defined by dedication, innovation and a deep passion for telling the stories that matter. An award-winning journalist, he has earned recognition at home and abroad for his contributions to the profession, and today he stands as one of the trailblazers of the Nigerian media industry.
As Publisher of Triangle News International, he has grown a media platform that, over the past decade, has risen to become one of the most respected voices in Nigeria. Under his leadership, Triangle News has built a reputation for incisive reporting, breaking key stories and setting the pace for investigative journalism, all while holding firmly to the values of integrity and fairness that the profession demands.
His vision has never been confined to the newsroom. For the past five years, Salako has organised the Face of Africa Leadership Awards in the United Kingdom, an annual gathering that celebrates outstanding Africans whose leadership is shaping communities, institutions and nations. What began as a bold idea has grown into a respected fixture on the diaspora calendar, bringing together leaders, professionals and change makers from across Africa and beyond. Through the awards, he has given a global stage to stories of African excellence that too often go untold, and the next edition, set for Oxford in April 2027, promises to carry that mission even further.
But beyond the headlines and the honours, Salako’s greatest legacy may well be the people he has inspired. His work has made him a reference point for a new generation of media professionals who see in him proof that vision, hard work and courage can build something lasting.
As he steps into a new year, we celebrate the man, the journalist, the convener and the mentor. Here’s to more years of impact, good health, and many more stories well told.
Happy birthday, Otunba!
