Christ the Redeemer: Brazil’s Iconic Statue of Jesus Christ

The Christ the Redeemer statue is one of the world’s most famous landmarks and a major symbol of Christianity and Brazilian culture.
Located atop Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the magnificent Art Deco monument depicts Jesus Christ with His arms stretched wide, symbolising peace, love, faith and protection.
Completed in 1931, the statue stands 30 metres tall, excluding its 8-metre pedestal, with an impressive arm span of 28 metres. It was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, with French sculptor Paul Landowski responsible for the sculpture.
Built with reinforced concrete and covered in soapstone, Christ the Redeemer overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro from approximately 710 metres above sea level.
In 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, further cementing its status as one of the most recognisable monuments on the planet.
