- ADC vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has criticised President Bola Tinubu over the attention given to Nigeria’s national anthem, describing it as ridiculous and questioning whether about ₦12 billion was spent on the change.
- His comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with Nigerians debating the alleged cost and the government’s priorities.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over what he described as misplaced priorities, questioning the attention given to Nigeria’s national anthem.
Amaechi, who is running alongside ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 election, questioned whether about ₦12 billion was spent on the change of the national anthem. The ADC formally announced Amaechi as its vice-presidential candidate in June 2026.
Speaking about the issue, Amaechi said, “…it’s ridiculous that the President wakes up and what bothers him is national anthem. Did they say they spent about 12 billion to change the national anthem?”
Nigeria officially reverted to its independence-era national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” in May 2024 after the National Assembly passed the bill and President Tinubu assented to it.
Amaechi’s ₦12 billion figure was raised as a question in his statement; it was not established in the available sources reviewed as the cost of changing the anthem.
His comments have since sparked reactions online, with some Nigerians questioning the reported figure and others criticising the government’s priorities.
