Ekiti’s second-term test: Oyebanji promises prosperity, better living

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has promised to make shared prosperity the defining goal of his second term and has pledged policies aimed at improving living standards and positioning the state as an attractive destination for residents, workers and investors.

Oyebanji made the commitment in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, two days after his inauguration on Friday. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and other political leaders for supporting the ceremony.

The governor described his inauguration as the start of another phase of service and said his administration would build on the work of its first term.

“Together, we shall continue to work towards shared prosperity for all Ekiti citizens and make our dear state the number-one destination of choice for those seeking a place to live, work, invest and relax,” he said.

The promise sets a clear expectation for the administration’s next four years. The key question is how the government will translate the language of prosperity into measurable improvements in household incomes, employment, public services and investment opportunities.

Tinubu’s support and Ekiti’s development plans

Oyebanji credited the Federal Government’s policies and resources provided to state governments with contributing to his administration’s achievements.

“We owe Mr President a huge debt of gratitude for his love and support for Ekiti State,” he said.

The statement did not identify specific federal allocations, projects or funding amounts linked to the governor’s claim. Details of those contributions would help residents assess how federal support has influenced development across the state.

Federal-state cooperation can support infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic programmes. However, the results also depend on how funds are allocated, projects are delivered and public resources are monitored.

Oyebanji’s second term therefore offers an opportunity to demonstrate how political cooperation can produce tangible benefits for communities across Ekiti.

From inauguration to delivery

The governor also acknowledged Shettima, who represented Tinubu at the ceremony, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, All Progressives Congress National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and other party officials.

He thanked serving and former governors, including Niyi Adebayo, Ayodele Fayose, Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi, alongside traditional rulers, lawmakers and members of the judiciary who attended the event.

The attendance of political figures from different administrations gave the inauguration a strong show of institutional and political support. Yet public confidence will ultimately depend on the administration’s performance beyond the ceremony.

For Ekiti residents, the practical measures to watch include the quality of public schools and hospitals, access to jobs, support for agriculture and small businesses, infrastructure delivery and the transparency of government spending.

Oyebanji has now set out his central promise: prosperity that reaches citizens across the state. His second term will be judged by whether that commitment produces visible improvements in everyday life, rather than remaining a political declaration.
