Opposition should admit Tinubu has done well, Wike says

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged opposition parties to acknowledge what he considers the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, warning against turning politics into a do-or-die affair.

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday during his monthly media chat in Abuja, where he criticised opposition parties for allegedly dismissing the president’s performance because they wanted to take over power.

According to the minister, political differences should not prevent parties from recognising policies or actions they consider beneficial to the country.

“The time has come that not because you are in the opposition party and then you say the man who is in charge of the affairs of the country has done nothing just because of the sake that I’m in opposition, that is not fair,” Wike said.

He maintained that, in his view, Tinubu had performed well, arguing that the opposition’s desire to replace the ruling party had influenced its assessment of the administration.

“For us, we think the president has done well, it’s just that the opposition wants to take over power,” he said.

Wike also accused opposition parties of failing to give Nigerians what he described as an honest account of the government’s performance.

He argued that political actors should be willing to acknowledge developments they believe would benefit the country, regardless of party affiliation.

“But the way the opposition is going now is a bit of a concern to us because they are not telling Nigerians the truth,” he said.

The minister urged politicians outside the ruling party to speak up when they believe government policies or actions are beneficial, rather than reject them solely because of their political differences.

“When you see something that will help your country, come out and say it, it doesn’t matter if you are in opposition or not,” Wike added.
