Ex-aide tells Makinde to drop presidential bid, let Tinubu rebuild Nigeria

Former presidential aide Okoi Obono-Obla has urged the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde, to step down for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

NewDailyPrime obtained Obono-Obla’s statement on Wednesday in a post on X. Obono-Obla pointed to recent public statements by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who commended the President’s reforms in the oil, tax, and security sectors.

Mohammed is the National Leader of the APM and forms a key part of the party’s presidential ticket alongside Makinde. Obono-Obla said Makinde should follow his party leader’s example by stepping aside to let the administration finish its programs.

“Governor Bala Mohammed has shown the way: when the government does well, say it. When reforms work, commend them. Opposition is not about blind hatred of the President.

In this spirit, the APM presidential candidate, Governor Seyi Makinde, should follow the honourable path his party’s National Leader has laid.

If Bala Mohammed can see and commend President Tinubu’s good work, then the logical, patriotic, and statesmanlike thing for Makinde to do is step down so President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can complete his bold agenda of resetting and rebuilding Nigeria,” he said.

He described Mohammed’s remarks as a sign of rare maturity and patriotism in Nigerian politics.

Praise for economic and security measures

Obono-Obla cited federal actions in the petroleum industry, stating that President Tinubu stopped subsidy fraud that previously cost 5 per cent of gross domestic product every year. He said the administration brought openness to crude oil production and revenue tracking.

He also pointed to tax reforms managed by Taiwo Oyedele and the Presidential Tax Committee. According to Obono-Obla, the tax plan ended multiple tax payments, protected low-income citizens, and ensured corporations and wealthy individuals pay proper taxes.

He added that higher tax revenue means state governments now receive more money to fund local projects, a fact he noted Governor Mohammed recognised.

On security, Obono-Obla highlighted the deployment of military forces and the creation of two army battalions in Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa to fight banditry in Bauchi State.

He said the security aid proved the President supports all states regardless of political party affiliations.

Call for responsible opposition politics

Obono-Obla criticised other opposition groups, including the African Democratic Congress and the Nigeria Democratic Congress, accusing them of engaging in bitter politics.

He stated that political parties must stop rejecting all government policies simply because they lost the presidential election.

He said opposition figures should commend effective policies instead of showing constant hostility toward the President.

Obono-Obla maintained that Nigeria requires reform continuity rather than disruption to achieve long-term growth.

“It is time for the rest of the opposition to learn. The ADC, NDC and other opposition elements must desist from this infantile, bitter and bad opposition politics of playing sour grapes.

You cannot wish Nigeria to fail simply because you lost an election. You cannot condemn every policy, even those clearly yielding positive results, to remain relevant. Nigerians are wiser than that,” he said.
