Fadeyi building collapse kills one, injures three workers

One construction worker has died and three others have been rescued with injuries after a two-storey building under construction collapsed overnight in Fadeyi, Lagos. The cause remains unknown as emergency responders continue search operations and questions emerge over safety at the site
A construction worker has died after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the early hours of Friday along Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
Three other workers were rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The incident reportedly occurred around midnight while the workers were sleeping at the site ahead of an early start to the next day’s construction work. The structure caved in, trapping them beneath the rubble.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident and said emergency teams were working to determine whether anyone else remained trapped.
He disclosed that responders had deployed an excavator to support the search-and-rescue operation. The agency’s initial account recorded three adult men rescued alive and one adult man recovered dead at about 3:33 a.m.
The identities of the victims had not been disclosed in the available report. Authorities had also not established what caused the building to collapse.
RELATED NEWS:
The central question now is whether the structure failed because of a construction defect, inadequate supervision or another factor. None of these possibilities has been confirmed, and a technical investigation will be needed to determine what happened.
The incident also highlights the risks construction workers may face when they sleep inside unfinished buildings. However, investigators must establish the condition of the structure and the circumstances at the site before determining whether the workers’ presence overnight contributed to the tragedy.
Beyond the rescue operation, the authorities will need to examine whether the building had approved plans, whether construction followed those specifications and whether required inspections were conducted at appropriate stages. Compliance with safety standards at the site will also require scrutiny.
Lagos has experienced repeated building collapses, keeping construction quality, professional supervision and regulatory enforcement in public focus. Yet, previous incidents do not establish the cause of this particular collapse. Evidence from the site and the findings of investigators must guide any conclusion.
The investigation should establish the structural condition of the building before it fell, identify any breaches of building regulations and determine whether responsibility rests with contractors, supervisors or other parties.
Any confirmed violations should attract appropriate action, while the findings should inform measures to prevent similar incidents.
LASEMA had not confirmed whether additional victims were trapped when the initial report was published. The agency’s search operation was continuing as responders cleared the debris.
The death underscores the human cost of construction failures. A clear account of what caused the collapse, coupled with effective enforcement of safety standards, will be essential to protect workers and residents from preventable tragedies.
