Tinubu Announces New Army Formations, Military Barracks Across Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has announced the operationalisation of new Nigerian Army formations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo and Osun states as part of renewed efforts to strengthen security and improve the military’s response to threats across the country.
The President made this known in a statement released on Sunday, saying the new formations would position troops closer to communities considered vulnerable to attacks.
According to Tinubu, the move is aimed at allowing the military to respond faster whenever communities come under threat.
He said, “This week, the Nigerian Army @HQNigerianArmy operationalised new formations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo and Osun. Our troops are now closer to vulnerable communities in these areas, strengthening our ability to respond swiftly and decisively when our people are threatened.”
The development comes as the Federal Government continues to reorganise the country’s military structure in response to persistent security challenges.
The latest move follows the broader expansion of the Nigerian Army approved by Tinubu earlier in the year.
In July, the President approved the expansion of the Army from eight to 12 divisions and the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel.
The expansion created new divisional headquarters in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City.
The Federal Government said the new structure was intended to decentralise military command, improve response time and strengthen security operations across different parts of the country.
The new formations announced by Tinubu are expected to complement that wider restructuring by increasing the Army’s presence at the community level.
Zamfara and Kebbi are particularly important to the security strategy because of the persistent attacks by armed bandits and kidnappers in parts of the North-West.
Several communities across the region have faced attacks, abductions and disruption of farming activities.
The increased military presence is therefore expected to improve the ability of security forces to reach affected areas and conduct operations closer to communities.
The President also disclosed that the Federal Government was moving ahead with the construction of new military barracks and depots in Abuja, Ekiti, Ebonyi and Kogi states.
Construction of the military facilities in Osun State, he said, had already been completed.
Tinubu said the projects were not only about expanding military infrastructure but also about improving the welfare and living conditions of personnel serving the country.
“We are also fast-tracking the construction of new barracks and depots in Abuja, Ekiti, Ebonyi and Kogi, with Osun already completed. As we demand more from our men and women in uniform, we must do more to support them and their families,” he stated.
The President linked the infrastructure projects to the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces.
He said military personnel require adequate facilities and support to carry out their duties effectively, especially as deployments continue across different parts of the country.
Tinubu also spoke about the recent increase in the salaries of military personnel, saying the adjustment had begun to improve the lives of servicemen, women and their families.
“Over the past few days, servicemen and women of the Armed Forces have shared what the recent pay increase means for them and their families. I am glad it is making a difference,” he said.
The President said better remuneration was necessary given the demands placed on military personnel.
He noted that deployments often affect not only the officers and soldiers involved but also their families, who remain at home while their relatives serve in difficult and sometimes dangerous locations.
“Every deployment is a sacrifice made by a family too. As our Armed Forces stand watch over Nigeria, my duty as Commander-in-Chief is to ensure they have the resources and support to do their job, and that Nigeria stands firmly behind the families waiting for them at home,” he added.
The Federal Government has in recent months placed greater emphasis on strengthening military manpower, equipment and infrastructure.
The expansion to 12 Army divisions is part of the administration’s broader security programme, which also includes the recruitment of additional personnel and investment in military platforms and operational equipment.
The restructuring has placed new divisional commands across different regions of the country.
The 5 Division is based in Makurdi and covers Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states, while the 9 Division in Ilorin covers Kwara and Niger states.
The 10 Division has its headquarters in Jalingo and covers Taraba and Adamawa states.
The Army is also expected to establish the 83 Division in Benin City to cover Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states.
Other existing formations have also been reorganised to improve coordination between military commands and the areas under their responsibility.
