FlyDubai Cockpit Attack: Israel arranges flights to bring stranded passengers home

Israel is arranging special flights to bring passengers stranded in the United Arab Emirates home after a dramatic cockpit attack aboard a FlyDubai aircraft raised fresh concerns about aviation security in the region.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, when FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 182 people aboard, including 174 passengers and eight crew members. The aircraft was cruising over Saudi Arabia when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain, causing the plane to lose altitude rapidly.
PASSENGERS FACE DISRUPTION AFTER FLIGHTS ARE SUSPENDED
The aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia, where the pilots and other crew members were taken into custody or received medical attention as authorities began investigating the incident.
FlyDubai subsequently suspended flights between Dubai and Israel, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded in the UAE. Israeli authorities then worked with the UAE to organise special flights to return passengers to Israel.
However, arrangements faced difficulties on Friday after the UAE reportedly withdrew landing approval for El Al’s planned repatriation flights. El Al cancelled the affected services, creating further uncertainty for Israelis waiting to return home. Later reports said permission for repatriation flights was restored, with Israeli carriers preparing to transport stranded passengers.
The disruption has added to tensions in a region already affected by the continuing US-Iran conflict.

CAPTAIN RECOUNTS STRUGGLE INSIDE COCKPIT
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, suffered injuries during the confrontation but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene.
A reserve crew that was on board subsequently took control of the aircraft and helped bring it safely to the Saudi airport. Reuters reported that flight-tracking data showed the aircraft plunged more than 16,000 feet in about 30 seconds during the incident.
Speaking from hospital during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Machchhar described the terrifying moments inside the cockpit.
“I was fighting for my life,” he said, explaining that he realised he had to continue fighting because the lives of the passengers were at stake.
Machchhar is recovering in the UAE, while officials from India and other countries have expressed concern over his condition.
INVESTIGATION FOCUSES ON MOTIVE
Authorities in the UAE are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether it was connected to terrorist activity, whether there was prior planning and whether anyone else directed or assisted the alleged attacker.
Saudi Arabia has also released preliminary findings indicating that the co-pilot assaulted the captain before the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk. The co-pilot was subsequently transferred to the UAE, where the investigation is continuing.
The motive has not been conclusively established publicly.
Israeli officials have made allegations about the co-pilot’s background and possible extremist motivation. However, those claims have not been independently established, and authorities investigating the incident are examining multiple possibilities.
The incident has renewed attention on cockpit security and the procedures used to assess airline personnel. It has also raised questions about how an attack inside a locked flight deck could be brought under control without resulting in a major aviation disaster.
For passengers stranded in Dubai, the immediate priority remains returning home as authorities work through the aviation and security consequences of the incident.
Investigators are expected to continue examining the aircraft’s flight data, the actions of the pilots and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation as they seek to establish exactly what happened aboard Flight FZ1073.
