“I Go Download App Because Of ₦66?” – FG, NNPC Says Motorists Must Use Mobile App To Enjoy Fuel Discount

• The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has restricted access to its ₦66-per-litre fuel discount to motorists who use its mobile app to complete their payments.
• The requirement has sparked criticism on X, with Nigerians questioning whether the small saving justifies the extra steps involved.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has come under criticism after reports emerged that motorists must use its mobile application to enjoy the ₦66-per-litre fuel discount at its retail outlets.

The offer is not automatically applied to customers who pay directly at the filling station. Motorists must download the NNPC Fuel App and complete their transactions through the platform to qualify for the discount.

The requirement has drawn mixed reactions, with several Nigerians questioning why customers must go through the additional process to enjoy the price reduction amid rising petrol prices.

Reacting to the announcement on X, one user joked that the application might require motorists to present their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Another questioned whether downloading an application was worth the ₦66 saving, while others described the arrangement as stressful and criticised the government’s approach to providing relief.

NNPC has explained that the app-based arrangement is intended to control transactions, prevent abuse and ensure the discount reaches eligible customers. The company has also maintained that the temporary price reduction does not amount to a return of the fuel subsidy.

However, the announcement has fuelled debate over whether the discount offers meaningful relief to Nigerians struggling with high fuel prices.
