Ilorin West rally tests PDP’s grassroots strength ahead of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken its campaign message through several communities in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, using a Saturday rally to promote its candidates and present itself as an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

The procession began at Omoda Roundabout and passed through Odeadana, Alore, Oloje, Itamerin, Pakata, Idigba, Gaa Aremu and Adeta. It continued through Agbo-Oba, Surulere and Adabata before ending at Oja Oba, near the Emir of Ilorin’s palace.

According to a report by NEW DAULY PRIME , residents joined the procession along the route, while party members from all 12 political wards in Ilorin West participated alongside community leaders, traders, transport workers, youths and women.

The rally was convened by the PDP chairman in the local government, Mallam Abdulkadir Issa, and his executive committee. Organisers said it was intended to sensitise voters, mobilise supporters and appreciate residents for their backing.

Candidates take campaign message to communities

The procession also served as a platform to promote the party’s candidates for the forthcoming elections. They include governorship candidate Engr. Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu, Kwara Central senatorial candidate Senator Saliu Mustapha, and House of Representatives candidate for Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency, Professor Abdulfatai Aremu.

The party also canvassed support for its two State House of Assembly candidates in Ilorin West, Abdulhammed Tunji and Mallam Alfanla.

Tunji thanked residents and party members for attending the rally. He said a PDP administration would introduce new ideas and leadership approaches intended to improve living standards.

Issa praised party members across the 12 wards for their mobilisation efforts. He also highlighted the reception in communities such as Pakata, Idigba and Adeta as evidence of the party’s local engagement.

However, the turnout alone does not establish how voters will behave at the ballot box. The rally demonstrated the PDP’s ability to organise a public procession across several communities, but its electoral significance will depend on whether that visibility translates into sustained support and votes.

PDP attacks APC’s record

The PDP’s Kwara Central senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Isiaka Babatunde Owolabi, criticised the APC-led state government, alleging that it had lost touch with residents’ needs.

He presented the PDP as an alternative and promised that a party administration would prioritise security, peaceful coexistence and inclusive development. He also praised the leadership of Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki for its selection of candidates.

Alfanla called on residents to support PDP candidates at both state and federal legislative levels.

The rally comes as parties position themselves for the 2027 elections. For the PDP, the immediate task is to turn its community-level mobilisation into a persuasive political offer.

That will require more than crowd turnout and criticism of the incumbent government. Voters will also need clear proposals on security, livelihoods, infrastructure and public services, alongside credible explanations of how the party would deliver them.

The Saturday procession offered the PDP an opportunity to reconnect with residents across Ilorin West. Whether that outreach can challenge the APC’s position in Kwara will become clearer as the campaign develops and voters assess the competing parties’ records and promises.
