Independence bridge repairs: Lagos sets three-day traffic diversion

Motorists using Lagos Island’s Independence Bridge will face temporary lane restrictions from Friday, October 16, as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent asphalt repairs scheduled to continue through Sunday, October 18.

The Lagos State Government announced the traffic arrangements on Thursday, warning road users to prepare for possible delays as repair crews work on the bridge’s inbound and outbound sections.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Works, the government said the intervention would involve partial closure of one section at a time, with at least one lane kept open to allow vehicles to pass.

The asphalt work is scheduled to begin on Friday night, continue throughout Saturday, October 17, and conclude on Sunday, October 18, with activities planned for both daytime and nighttime.

The arrangement is intended to keep the bridge accessible while contractors carry out the repairs. However, retaining a lane does not guarantee normal traffic flow, particularly if vehicle volumes exceed the available road capacity during busy periods.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the government had put traffic management measures in place to reduce disruption. Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to direct vehicles and manage movement around the affected sections.

Motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys, consider alternative routes where practical and comply with instructions from traffic officials.

The timing could determine how much disruption commuters experience. Friday’s work will begin at night, but the repairs are scheduled to continue through the weekend. Drivers travelling for work, business, leisure or essential appointments should therefore avoid assuming that the bridge will be free-flowing simply because the work begins outside normal daytime hours.

The government has not disclosed the total cost of the repairs, the contractor handling the project or the specific sections requiring asphalt treatment. It has also not provided estimated journey delays or a detailed list of alternative routes in the announcement.

These details would help motorists make more precise travel decisions, especially those who depend on the bridge to connect with destinations on Lagos Island and surrounding parts of the city.

The intervention is being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works, while the Lagos State Government is coordinating traffic management. This division places the repair work with the federal authorities and the immediate movement of road users under state traffic arrangements.

Motorists should watch for further official updates before setting out, particularly if their journeys depend on crossing the bridge during the repair period.

The key test will be whether the work is completed by Sunday as scheduled and whether traffic officials can maintain safe movement through the reduced road space. Until the repairs are finished, planning ahead and allowing additional travel time may help commuters avoid unnecessary delays.
