Katsina cleric shot dead outside home

Gunmen on a motorcycle have shot dead Islamic scholar Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate, Adamu Abubakar, in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. This incident has prompted a police manhunt amid unanswered questions about the motive for the attack.
The assailants reportedly opened fire on the victims at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 26, in front of the cleric’s residence before escaping.
The Katsina State Police Command said the Divisional Police Officer in Dutsin-Ma mobilised officers to the scene after receiving a distress report. The victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital, where a doctor confirmed their deaths.
Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage subsequently ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and operational teams to track down the fleeing suspects.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, said investigations had begun to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible. The command had not announced any arrests or disclosed a possible motive in the initial report.

Motive behind killing remains unclear
The circumstances surrounding the shooting have yet to be established. Police have not said whether the victims had received threats before the incident or whether the attack was linked to the cleric’s religious activities, a personal dispute or another motive.
The reported use of a motorcycle may provide investigators with a lead as they reconstruct the assailants’ movements. Witness accounts and any available surveillance footage could also help establish how the attackers approached the victims and escaped.
However, the police have not disclosed whether such evidence has been obtained. Identifying the suspects and establishing a clear motive will be central to determining whether the shooting was a targeted killing or part of a different criminal operation.
The incident has also renewed concerns about personal safety in Katsina, where communities have faced persistent security challenges, including armed attacks and kidnappings. The available information, however, does not establish a link between this killing and other incidents in the state.
Police seek public assistance
CP Fage expressed condolences to the victims’ families, friends, followers and residents of Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area. He said the command was committed to ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice.
The police appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist the investigation by contacting the relevant authorities.
Beyond the manhunt, the case presents investigators with several immediate tasks: identifying the attackers, establishing their motive, tracing their escape route and determining whether anyone else was involved.
The deaths of the cleric and his associate have left their families and followers seeking answers. Until investigators release further findings, the circumstances behind the shooting remain uncertain.
The police have promised action, but the next significant development will be evidence of progress in identifying the assailants and establishing responsibility for the killings.
