NDC faults APC over distribution of ₦1bn Toyota Prado SUVs to youth leaders

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the distribution of brand-new 2026 Toyota Prado SUVs to selected youth leaders for election mobilisation.

The opposition party made its position known in a post on X, reacting to a video shared by APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, showing the vehicles.

The NDC estimated that the seven SUVs visible in the video were worth about ₦1.015 billion, accusing the ruling party of prioritising politicians’ luxury and comfort while Nigerians continue to face economic hardship.

“The average cost of a brand-new 2026 Toyota Prado is ₦145,000,000. In this video, we counted seven such vehicles, and the number could be even higher,” the party said.

“The total cost of these seven vehicles alone amounts to ₦1,015,000,000.”

The NDC criticised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, arguing that Nigerians had been asked to endure hardship while political leaders continued to enjoy expensive benefits.

It described the vehicle distribution as an example of what it considers wasteful government spending, although the statement did not establish whether the SUVs were purchased with public funds.

The party also called on Nigerians to vote the APC out of power in the 2027 general elections, describing electoral participation as a civic responsibility.

“We cannot continue like this. We owe Nigerians and the unborn generation the civic duty to vote the ruinous administration of President Bola Tinubu out of power,” it said.

Promoting its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the NDC pledged that an Obi-led administration would reduce the cost of governance.

“Our presidential candidate is strongly committed to cutting the cost of governance,” the party said, urging Nigerians to support what it described as “a new and working Nigeria for all, and not for a corrupt few”.

Earlier, Israel announced the presentation of the vehicles to selected youth leaders, saying they would support the party’s election mobilisation efforts.

“Today, I presented brand new 2026 Prado to my committed selected youth leaders to aid their election mobilisation activities,” he wrote.

He also expressed appreciation to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her continued support for the party’s structure under his leadership.

Israel further emphasised the APC’s focus on grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, saying the party would “deliver polling unit by polling unit”.

The NDC’s ₦1.015 billion valuation is based on its estimated average price of ₦145 million per vehicle and its count of seven SUVs in the video.
