NPFL switches on the Floodlights with friday night football

The Nigeria Premier Football League(NPFL) is shaking up its traditional weekend routine by introducing Friday night fixtures, a move designed to put top-flight football in front of supporters who have long struggled to attend or watch matches on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The new arrangement kicks off with the Matchday Nine clash between Shooting Stars and Ranchers Bees at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan on Friday, October 16, with kick-off set for 6pm.

League organisers are not stopping at Fridays. They will also bring forward kick-off times for selected Saturday and Sunday matches as the season progresses, giving the fixture calendar a variety it has rarely enjoyed. Because the NPFL has leaned heavily on weekend afternoon kick-offs for years, the revised schedule marks a clear break from tradition and signals the league’s determination to modernise the way it presents its matches and to boost the appeal of domestic football.

The changes also open new doors for the people who bankroll and back the game. Clubs and commercial partners will gain fresh opportunities to engage with fans, while the league hopes that evening football will draw in supporters who cannot make it to traditional weekend afternoon fixtures because of work, travel or other commitments.

Organisers believe that a more flexible calendar will translate into stronger attendance and deeper fan engagement once the new format begins.

Shooting Stars arrive at the landmark fixture with a pleasant memory of Friday football, because the Ibadan club has already tasted it this season. They hosted Inter Lagos on a Friday in the opening matchday and edged them 2-1, a result that gave the Oluyole Warriors a winning start at home.

The meeting with Ranchers Bees will be their second Friday home fixture of the campaign, and the club will hope to repeat that success under the lights while helping to launch the league’s experiment in style.
