Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo says Nigeria still has a long way to go as it marks 66 years of independence.
He said the gains so far are a foundation to build on and not a finished job.
He made this known in his message to Nigerians on October 1, 2026.
He thanked Edo residents for their patience and said government exists to serve the people and must keep listening, even when the feedback is uncomfortable.
The governor also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his efforts to reposition the country.
He described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a necessary step for national revival and claimed it has already pushed the country toward economic stability and growth.
He urged citizens to use the anniversary to recommit to peace and unity, saying true patriotism shows in how people treat one another and protect public assets.
Okpebholo promised to keep protecting lives and property in Edo, calling security his administration’s first responsibility.
He said farming, trade, investment and all other economic activity depend on peace.
He said the state is rebuilding roads, upgrading schools and hospitals and creating opportunities for young people.
He added that his government will keep working with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other partners because of their closeness to the people and knowledge of the local terrain.
He warned that Edo is not a safe place for criminals.
The governor wished Edo people a peaceful celebration and prayed for continued progress in the state and the nation.
