PDP’s Interim Working Committee rejects backing Tinubu’s re-election

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) Interim National Working Committee has said it will not support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. The committee made this known in a press statement on Tuesday.

The committee was reacting to news credited to Minister Nyesom Wike. That news said PDP candidates should collapse their structures and back the President’s return to office.

Who the message is meant for

Comrade Ini Ememobong, the committee’s National Publicity Secretary, signed the statement. It says the news is “nothing new”. It also says the message is not aimed at real PDP members.

The statement says the message is meant for persons who, like Mr Wike, “are pretenders in the opposition but are working for the governing party.”

It says true and principled PDP members have no part in the “shameless, self-serving support for the APC-led Federal Government and its destructive policies.”

The statement explained that an opposition party must give voters an alternative to the party in power. It says that duty does not include flattering those in office.

It also says any alliance among opposition parties should be with each other. It rules out an alliance with the governing party.

Warning on the “rainbow coalition”

The committee calls the idea of joining forces with the governing party a political anomaly, meaning something that breaks the normal order. It says the idea is styled and championed as a “rainbow coalition.”

In the statement’s view, this is the greatest threat to electoral democracy. It says the idea is also the fastest way of “railroading the country into an electoral monarchy.”

The statement tells Nigerians to be wary of “elite accommodation and state capture masquerading as broad-based political collaboration.” It does not explain these terms.

It says next year’s election gives voters a chance to vote out “insensitive and irresponsible political actors.”

The committee also spoke to its own members. It asked all true and faithful PDP members to stay firm while the party waits for a court ruling.

The statement says the party’s case at the Court of Appeal has been heard and judgment is awaited. The committee says it hopes the ruling will return the party to its “true owners.”

It says the whole judiciary knows that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

WHAT READERS SHOULD KNOW

The PDP’s statement makes clear that its interim leadership rejects support for Tinubu’s re-election and favours cooperation among opposition parties.

Nonetheless, the party’s position on the dispute over its ownership remains tied to the pending Court of Appeal judgment.
