Priest killed by falling crucifix after preaching about death in Ecuador

A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large wooden crucifix fell on him during a church service, just moments after he delivered a sermon about the uncertainty of life and the inevitability of death.

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, was leading an evening Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil on Saturday, 17 October 2026, when the crucifix suddenly fell from the wall behind him, striking his head.

The incident was captured during a livestream of the service, leaving worshippers in shock as they rushed to help the priest.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil subsequently confirmed his death and expressed condolences to his family, friends and religious community.

Priest spoke about death moments before tragedy

What has attracted widespread attention is the message Father Sánchez delivered shortly before the accident.

During his sermon, he encouraged worshippers to reflect on how they spend their lives, reminding them that death is inevitable and that time with God and loved ones should not be taken for granted.

He urged members of the congregation to devote more attention to their families, faith and relationships rather than allowing everyday activities to consume their time.

According to Catholic news agency OSV News, which cited Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, the priest told worshippers that everyone would eventually face death.

He explained that time spent pursuing other interests could become less meaningful when compared with moments dedicated to God and family.

The priest’s reflections on mortality have become a central part of the story because of the tragic events that followed only minutes later.

Crucifix falls during livestreamed Mass

Footage from the church service showed Father Sánchez standing at the altar and facing the congregation when the large crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly came loose.

The heavy wooden structure fell forward and struck him on the head before he could react.

The impact caused him to collapse behind the altar, prompting cries of alarm from those attending the service.

Some worshippers immediately rushed towards the priest, while others called for an ambulance.

The broadcast continued briefly as the congregation attempted to respond to the emergency.

According to reports by the Associated Press and NBC News, the priest did not appear to notice the crucifix falling behind him.

The recording subsequently circulated across social media, attracting widespread attention before the original footage was removed.

Despite attempts to assist him, Father Sánchez died on Saturday.

The circumstances surrounding the crucifix’s collapse remain unclear. There has been no confirmed explanation of why the structure detached from the wall.

Catholic Church confirms priest’s death

Following the tragedy, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil issued a statement confirming that Father Sánchez had died.

The archdiocese expressed sympathy with his relatives, fellow priests and members of the wider Catholic community.

Father Sánchez belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order founded in 1732.

The congregation is known for its missionary work and presence in countries across the world.

His death also drew condolences from San Lorenzo Parish in Vinces, where he had previously served as a priest.

The parish remembered him through prayers and expressions of sympathy for those affected by his death.

A memorial Mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Sunday, 18 October, as members of the congregation gathered to remember their priest.

Questions remain over cause of accident

Although the church has confirmed the priest’s death, questions remain about how the crucifix became detached during the service.

It is not yet clear whether the incident resulted from a fault in its mounting, deterioration of the supporting structure or another cause.

No official technical findings have been released, and local authorities had not publicly explained the circumstances of the accident as of Monday.

The tragedy has also drawn attention to the priest’s final message, which encouraged worshippers to appreciate the time they have with their families and loved ones.

For members of his congregation, the service that began with prayers and reflections on faith ended in an unexpected tragedy.

His death has prompted mourning within the Catholic community in Ecuador, with prayers and tributes recognising his years of religious service.
