Real Madrid hand UEFA 50,000 pages in Negreira case as Barcelona hit back

Real Madrid have delivered a mountain of new evidence to UEFA in the Negreira affair, and the two clubs are now trading very different readings of what happens next.
UEFA confirmed on Thursday that it received “a substantial amount of documents” from Madrid relating to its ongoing investigation into Barcelona. The governing body said its ethics and disciplinary inspectors also hold the material and will weigh it as part of their continuing review. Reports say the dossier runs to more than 50,000 pages.
The back story
The case centres on payments Barcelona made over two decades to José María Enríquez Negreira, who served as vice-president of the Technical Committee of Referees at the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The money flowed to a man who sat at the heart of the system that appoints and assesses Spain’s match officials.
Barcelona have always insisted the payments bought scouting and technical reports on referees. Critics have alleged the money was meant to influence refereeing decisions. UEFA appointed two investigators in 2023, and a criminal case in Spain is also moving through the courts.

Madrid press for speed
Real Madrid said UEFA acknowledged their complaint and confirmed the investigation would continue. The club described the events as being of “extraordinary seriousness” and argued they strike at the integrity of competition and trust in the refereeing system.
Madrid demanded UEFA move with “the utmost urgency” until the case reaches its conclusion, and called on the competent bodies to act in proportion to the gravity of any facts established.
The club pledged to keep cooperating actively with European football’s governing body and to take every step within its power to address what it sees as a breach of integrity, transparency and fair play.
Barcelona fire back
Barcelona wasted no time rejecting the idea that anything new has begun. “UEFA has not opened any new proceedings against FC Barcelona,” the club said, stressing that the case started in 2023 and has “never been closed.”
In Barcelona’s reading, UEFA’s statement merely confirms it received Madrid’s paperwork and that investigators will examine it within the existing inquiry. The club argued the statement does not announce any opening, reopening or reactivation of proceedings, and offers no verdict on the quality of the documents.
The Catalan side added that investigators had made no fresh requests of them, and had not passed Madrid’s complaint on to the club as of Thursday. Barcelona promised to respond properly if that changes.
They also pointed out that the UEFA process depends on the outcome of the Spanish criminal case. Since the investigation began, they noted, Barcelona have kept winning UEFA licences without objection and have continued to play in European competitions.
What happens next
For now, the facts are narrow. UEFA has taken delivery of Madrid’s evidence and will assess it. Nothing in its statement signals a new charge or a change in the case’s status.
Madrid want speed and sanctions that match the seriousness they allege. Barcelona want the matter understood as an old, unfinished inquiry that has simply gained a few more pages. How UEFA’s inspectors treat a 50,000-page file will decide which club’s version proves closer to the truth.
