Rubio begins NATO tour as Arctic security takes centre stage in Iceland

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has begun a three-country tour of NATO allies, arriving in Iceland as Washington seeks to strengthen cooperation with European partners on security, energy and economic issues.

Rubio is visiting Iceland on Tuesday at the start of a four-day diplomatic tour that will also take him to Greece and Portugal. His visit comes as Arctic security receives increased attention among NATO members because of the region’s growing strategic importance.

Before departing Washington, Rubio described Iceland as a “good friend” of the United States and said he was looking forward to the visit.

“This is an opportunity to stop there and talk to people,” Rubio told reporters before boarding his flight, according to Icelandic broadcaster RÚV.

Rubio said the visit would focus on shared priorities, including Arctic security, commercial and energy ties, and defence cooperation.

ARCTIC SECURITY AT CENTRE OF ICELAND TALKS

Rubio is expected to hold discussions with Icelandic officials on economic and security cooperation, including Arctic security and defence.

Iceland is a NATO member but does not maintain a standing army. Its geographic position near Greenland and between North America and Europe gives it particular importance in discussions about security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

The visit also comes after months of sensitivity between Washington and some European partners over U.S. policy towards Greenland and the wider Arctic.

However, Rubio has emphasised cooperation during his Iceland visit, with the U.S. State Department saying the discussions are aimed at strengthening economic and security ties.

The talks provide an opportunity for the two NATO allies to discuss their security relationship while addressing wider economic and strategic interests in the region.

RUBIOS TO CONTINUE TOUR IN GREEC AND PORTUGAL

After Iceland, Rubio is scheduled to travel to Greece, where he will lead the U.S. delegation at the sixth U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue.

The discussions are expected to cover defence, energy and regional security, with Washington seeking closer cooperation with Athens.

Rubio will then travel to Portugal, where talks are expected to focus on defence, economic and technology cooperation before he returns to Washington on Thursday.

The October 5–8 tour comes as the United States seeks to deepen cooperation with European allies while placing greater emphasis on security in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

For Iceland, the talks offer an opportunity to reinforce its security relationship with Washington while discussing the country’s interests in Arctic security, trade and defense cooperation.
