Zamfara: Angry youths chase deputy governor out of community

Youths in Gwashi community, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Sunday chased away the state Deputy Governor, Mani Malam Mummuni.

The confrontation occurred during a visit by Mummuni to commiserate with residents over bandit attacks.

He had visited the community to sympathise with them and offer support to affected families.

The visit, however, turned chaotic as angry youths confronted him and his entourage, venting their frustration over persistent insecurity in Gwashi and surrounding communities.

A video from the scene showed the moment tension escalated, with security operatives attached to the Deputy Governor reportedly fleeing and abandoning their vehicle.

Gwashi and other communities in Bukkuyum have come under repeated attacks, with residents facing serious security threats while travelling between villages and accessing local markets.

The incident comes days after gunmen killed about 20 people in an ambush on traders travelling under military escort in the state.

The traders were said to be travelling from Gwashi to Nasarawa Market in Bukkuyum LGA on Saturday, October 10, when armed men attacked them around 2 p.m.

Four soldiers, three policemen, one NSCDC officer and 12 civilians were killed in the attack, while 19 others sustained injuries, according to reports.

In a separate incident about a month earlier, six Islamic clerics were abducted along the Dakko-Damri feeder road in Bakura LGA while travelling to Talata Mafara.

Police spokesperson in the state, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the abduction, saying the victims, all imams, were intercepted by armed bandits.
