Russia says over 100 drones downed as major oil refinery is reportedly targeted

Russian authorities have reported that more than 100 drones were destroyed during an overnight attack on the Nizhny Novgorod region, east of Moscow, while a major oil refinery in the area was reportedly targeted.
The attack occurred in the Kstovo district, where regional governor Gleb Nikitin confirmed that an industrial enterprise sustained significant damage.
In a statement released on Sunday, November 1, Nikitin said Russian air defences had intercepted and destroyed more than 100 drones during what he described as a massive overnight attack.
“More than 100 drones destroyed,” he said, adding that an industrial enterprise in the Kstovo district had sustained significant damage.
“According to preliminary information, there are no casualties,” he added.
However, the governor did not identify the affected facility or provide further details about the extent of the damage.
MAJOR OIL REFINERY REPORTEDLY TARGETED
The facility reportedly hit was the NORSI oil refinery in Kstovo, one of Russia’s major oil-processing facilities.
According to Ukrainian monitoring channels, the refinery was targeted during the overnight drone assault. However, there has been no independent confirmation of the extent of the damage or an official Ukrainian military statement claiming responsibility for the attack.
The refinery plays an important role in Russia’s energy industry, processing crude oil into petroleum products, including petrol and diesel.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil refineries, fuel depots and other energy installations as part of its efforts to disrupt infrastructure supporting Moscow’s military operations.

RUSSIA REPORTS RENEWED ATTACKS ON ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE
The latest incident comes amid continuing attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Friday that Ukraine had resumed attacks on Russian oil facilities, including three refineries and a gas-chemical complex.
Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of targeting critical infrastructure since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Both countries have increasingly deployed long-range drones against military, industrial and energy facilities far beyond the front lines.
The reported strike on the Kstovo refinery highlights the continuing vulnerability of Russia’s energy infrastructure as the conflict shows little sign of ending.
