The Nigerian Army has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Mr. Abdulsamad Jamiu, who lost his life during a security incident in Dei-Dei area of Abuja.
In a statement signed by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Abuja, the Army said the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate, Dei-Dei, when troops responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack.
According to the statement, troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, who were on routine night patrol, came under gunfire from fleeing armed robbers upon arrival at the scene, leading to a brief but intense exchange.
“In the course of the engagement, Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said.
The Army described the development as a heartbreaking loss that has cast a deep shadow over personnel of the Guards Brigade, noting that the situation at the time was “fluid and highly volatile” as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents.
The Commander, Guards Brigade, officers and soldiers, the statement added, extended “their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the National Youth Service Corps, and all who are affected by this painful loss.”
“We share in their grief and stand in solidarity with them during this moment of profound sorrow,” it stated.
The Army further disclosed that a thorough investigation had been initiated to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that findings would be made public.
It also confirmed that the remains of the deceased had been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, the Guards Brigade said it would continue to review its operational procedures to enhance civilian safety.
The public was urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies in ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security.
