A set of newborn twins abandoned in a bush in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State has been rescued by a local task force.
The disturbing incident happened on Friday, at Mbaaji in Ningev Council Ward, an area known locally as “Wangbeen Jor.”
According to the Chairman of the Local Government Task Force, Chief Daniel Orhembega, the babies were found during a routine sanitation exercise.
“We were going to dispose refuse when one of our men heard a baby crying.
“When we followed the sound, we saw the twins wrapped in fresh leaves, with the placenta and a gown believed to belong to the mother.”
Sources said one of the babies was crying loudly while the other lay quietly asleep raising fears they had been abandoned shortly after birth.
The twins were immediately rushed to a nearby clinic for urgent medical attention.
Reacting, the Chairman of Vandeikya Local Government, Hon. Dennis Terkura Guda, expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as unacceptable.
He later visited the babies at the clinic, took responsibility for their welfare, and gave them names. Guda-Alia (boy) and Alia-Doo (girl).
The babies are now in the custody of the Local Government Welfare Department.
Meanwhile, the council boss has called on residents to provide useful information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the mother.
