Today marks the 86th birthday of His Royal Highness, the 11th Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, a revered statesman, royal father, custodian of culture, and enduring symbol of unity whose leadership continues to inspire generations across Kwara State and Nigeria at large.
On this momentous occasion, the Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, Comrade Issa Aremu, mni, has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating a monarch whose life has been defined by wisdom, humility, and an unwavering commitment to peace, progress, as well as service to Almighty Allah.
In the past 30 years of his eventful reign, His Royal Highness has built an Emirate of stability, cultural revival, and modernization with major achievements that include fostering peace, the annual Durbar festival, fostering significant infrastructure improvements, expanding educational access, and elevating Ilorin as a vibrant economic hub, and centre of diversity.
The Emir’s reign has stood as a shining example of how traditional leadership can effectively complement modern governance, bridging divides, promoting harmony, and nurturing a collective sense of purpose among diverse communities. His Royal Highness has remained a strong pillar of unity, not only within the Ilorin Emirates but across Nigeria, especially in times when the nation has needed voices of reason, stability, and reconciliation.
Comrade Aremu recalled many memories of mentorship by the Emir in his decades of labour union carrier. The Emir as a labour friendly Royal father opened the doors of the place several times to critical stakeholders in the labour market that included comrades from unions and officials of International Labour organization (ILO). Aremu fondly recalls his privileged shared participation as a labour delegate at the historic 2014 National Conference Nigeria convened by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. During that defining national engagement, the Director General recalled that the Emir distinguished himself as a voice of moderation, wisdom and patriotism, contributing meaningfully to discussions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s unity and democratic foundations and high made the conference a historic success.
