Agronomists under the Foundation for Sustainable Smallholder Solutions have completed a three-day intensive training focused on the implementation of rice and maize multi-location trials across Nigeria.
The training, conducted under the Using Performance Data to Promote Better Seed Varieties (ProSeV) Project, brought together field experts to strengthen capacity in agronomic practices and data-driven trial management.
According to the organisation, the sessions covered standard agronomic practices for rice and maize, as well as the standard operating procedures guiding multi-location trials. Participants were also introduced to digital tools designed to improve accuracy in field data collection and enhance real-time decision-making.
“The training focused on how our multi-location trials for rice and maize will be implemented across Nigeria,” the foundation said in a statement. “We also onboarded participants on the FSSS-implemented ProSeV field trial app and dashboard to support accurate data collection, validation, and timely decision-making.”
The programme extended beyond classroom sessions, with practical field exercises on trial layout, crop establishment, and hands-on use of the data collection application.
Speaking during the training, a representative of the organisation noted that the field component was critical to ensuring that agronomists gain practical experience. “Beyond theory, participants carried out practical sessions in the field, which is essential for improving trial consistency and reliability,” the statement added.
The training also featured contributions from development partners, including AfricaRice. A resource person, Dr Thomas, introduced participants to the RiceAdvice application, providing insights into improved rice management practices and potential collaboration opportunities.
The foundation emphasised that the initiative is aimed at strengthening seed systems and improving farmers’ access to better-performing crop varieties.
“This training is a key step in ensuring quality, consistency, and reliability across all our trial locations as we continue to generate performance data that supports better seed choices for farmers,” it stated.
