Hungary’s incoming Prime Minister, Péter Magyar said that Hungary will comply with International Criminal Court arrest warrants, stating that any wanted individual entering the country would be detained — in a clear reference to Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu who is wanted by the ICC for war crimes.
Speaking at a press conference in Budapest, Magyar addressed questions about his invitation to Netanyahu to visit Hungary next October for the commemoration of the 1956 uprising, despite an ICC arrest warrant issued in 2024 on charges including war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Magyar confirmed that he intends to reverse the decision of the outgoing government led by Viktor Orbán to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, a move that had been scheduled to take effect on 2nd June.
He said he had informed Netanyahu during a phone call that Hungary would remain a member of the ICC, adding: “If a wanted person enters our country while we are members of the court, he must be taken into custody.”
Responding to journalists, Magyar added: “I don’t need to explain everything over the phone; I assume every head of state and government is aware of these laws.”
The statement places Netanyahu in a legal dilemma should he accept the invitation and travel to Budapest, as Hungary would be obligated to arrest and transfer him to the ICC.
The outgoing government of Viktor Orbán had announced Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC last year following a meeting with Netanyahu, a move widely viewed as political support. However, Magyar’s position signals a policy shift toward compliance with international judicial decisions.
