No fewer than four persons, including three farmers and a herder, have been killed in fresh attacks across communities in Plateau state.
The incidents occurred in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas, with community leaders confirming that the farmers were killed on Sunday night in Pwomol village, Heipang District, while the herder was murdered on Monday morning in Jol community.
The attacks come just days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state following the deadly assault on Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North, where 28 people were killed, and assured residents that such incidents would not recur.
Leaders of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) confirmed the killings but blamed each other for the violence.
Rwang Tengwong, BYM spokesperson said the victims were vigilante youths guarding their community, adding that another individual sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
The group called for a thorough and transparent investigation by security agencies.
On the other hand, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, MACBAN’s state chairman said the herder was ambushed and killed while travelling with his younger brother, who managed to escape.
He noted that the incident had been reported to security agencies, including the Department of State Services and Operation Safe Haven.
Both groups denied responsibility for the attacks, further deepening tensions in the area.
Polycap Oteh, the spokesperson of Operation Enduring Peace said he would provide clarification after gathering details but had yet to respond as of press time.
The latest killings add to a series of recent attacks in Plateau communities, raising fresh concerns over security and the effectiveness of ongoing peace efforts in the state.
