Somalia has confirmed its strong rejection of Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic mission in the Somaliland region, describing the move as a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Somali Minister of Information Daud Aweis said in remarks reported by Al Jazeera that the step reflects continued violations against the Somali state, stressing that Somalia is a sovereign nation whose unity cannot be compromised.
He added that the government has informed the international community of its opposition, describing the Israeli decision as an “aggressive act” aimed at fuelling tensions in the Horn of Africa.
Regarding possible responses, Aweis said diplomatic channels remain the government’s priority, noting that efforts began as soon as the recognition of the region was announced.
The minister also revealed that Somalia has secured broad support from the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, and several countries, all of which share its rejection of the move.
