The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its call for lawful travel practices, warning that visa overstays by Nigerian travellers could have wider implications for future applicants.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the Mission stressed that strict compliance with US immigration rules was critical to sustaining fair and open access for legitimate travellers.
It noted that when individuals overstay their visas or breach entry conditions, it may negatively impact the overall perception of compliance among applicants from the same country, potentially influencing future visa decisions.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated.
“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
The Mission emphasised that thousands of Nigerians travel to the United States annually for education, business, tourism, and family visits, urging applicants to adhere strictly to visa conditions throughout their stay.
It also flagged visa fraud and misuse of travel documents as ongoing concerns, calling on members of the public to help safeguard the integrity of the immigration system.
According to the Mission, individuals with credible information on visa fraud are encouraged to report through official consular fraud prevention channels, including [email protected] and [email protected].
The Mission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not disadvantaged by the actions of violators.
