The Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent reduction in fares on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
Naijaonpoint reports that the approval was announced by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi.
According to the ministry, the discount will take effect from Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and remain in place until Monday, June 1, 2026.
The government said the measure was aimed at easing transportation costs for Nigerians travelling during the festive period.
The ministry explained that ticket prices on all NRC passenger routes nationwide had been reduced by half of the existing approved fares.
It said the fare cut would apply to all passenger train services operated by the corporation within the approved period.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation currently operates passenger services on major routes, including Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna and Warri-Itakpe.
It also runs narrow-gauge services within Lagos and Ogun states.
The Federal Government also announced that passengers who had already purchased tickets before the discount was declared would not lose out.
According to the statement, such passengers will receive a 50 per cent rebate on the amount paid.
The ministry said the rebate could be reused for train journeys on or before June 1, 2026.
This means affected passengers will be able to enjoy the same benefit as those buying tickets after the announcement.
The ministry clarified that the fare reduction would not affect train schedules and timetables across the country.
It said all train services would continue to run according to the existing timetable throughout the period of the discount.
The Federal Ministry of Transportation thanked Nigerians for their continued support and wished Muslim faithful and all passengers a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
