A United Kingdom-based Nigerian lawyer, Baron Chymaker, has announced that he has formally begun the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.
Chymaker disclosed the development in a post shared on his X account, revealing that his legal representative in Nigeria had completed the necessary documentation and submitted his application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

According to him, all required fees have also been paid, and he is now awaiting official approval from the Nigerian government.
“I have today received confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” he wrote.
Although Chymaker did not explain the reasons behind his decision, the announcement has attracted attention because of his strong opinions on legal and governance issues affecting Nigeria.
The lawyer is well known on social media for commenting on international law, the legal systems of both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and developments in the cryptocurrency industry.
Over the years, he has been a vocal critic of aspects of Nigeria’s judicial system, particularly the application of the doctrine of judicial precedent, also known as *stare decisis*. He has argued that the principle has, in some instances, contributed to controversial judicial decisions, especially in election petition cases.
Chymaker has also encouraged Nigerian-trained lawyers to improve their professional qualifications through advanced legal studies and has often advised them to consider practising in countries with more developed legal systems. He has repeatedly shared these views through his social media platforms, where he regularly engages in discussions on legal reforms and professional development.
Under Nigerian law, citizens who wish to renounce their nationality are required to submit a formal declaration to the appropriate government authority. The application is subject to approval by the Federal Government before the renunciation becomes legally effective.
As of the time of filing this report, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had not issued any statement confirming receipt or approval of Chymaker’s application.
The lawyer’s announcement has since generated discussions online, with supporters describing it as a personal decision, while others have questioned the factors that may have influenced his move. However, until the application is officially approved, Chymaker remains a Nigerian citizen under the law.
