The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated a large consignment of medical and biomedical laboratory equipment, ambulances and information technology facilities to The Gambia to strengthen the country’s public health system.
The equipment was officially handed over in Banjul by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, during a ceremony attended by the Director-General of the West African Health Organisation, Dr Melchior Athanase J. C. Aissi, and The Gambia’s Vice President, Muhammad B. S. Jallow, a statement said at the weekend.
Also present were the Gambian Minister of Health, other government officials, representatives of the African Development Bank and development partners.
The intervention was carried out under the Regional COVID-19 Response Project, which is funded by the African Development Bank and implemented by the West African Health Organisation for the benefit of ECOWAS Member States.
According to ECOWAS, the donation includes medical and biomedical laboratory equipment, ambulances, information technology and communication facilities designed to improve healthcare delivery and enhance the long-term capacity of The Gambia’s national health system.
The regional bloc said the initiative reflects the shared commitment of ECOWAS, WAHO and the African Development Bank to strengthening health security, improving emergency response capabilities and building more resilient health systems across West Africa.
