Human rights lawyer Timzing Venyri Ramnap has petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, seeking criminal prosecution of former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Umar Danladi, over an alleged assault incident.
In the petition dated May 14, 2026, Ramnap requested that the Attorney General either initiate criminal proceedings or grant him fiat to pursue a private prosecution.The petition relates to an alleged assault involving one Clement Sargwak at Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja, on May 29, 2021. According to the lawyer, the incident attracted public attention after a video of the altercation circulated online.
Ramnap said he acted both as a citizen and as counsel involved in a related petition previously presented before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.Citing provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, the lawyer argued that the matter deserved judicial review.
He stated that if proven, the alleged conduct could amount to an offence under the Penal Code applicable in the Federal Capital Territory. Ramnap also said he was prepared to provide video evidence and witness statements previously submitted to the Senate committee. Neither Umar Danladi nor the Office of the Attorney General had issued a public response to the petition at the time of filing this report.
