A rights activist and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Mr. Prince Wiro, has called on the youth leadership of Rumuomoi Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area to immediately hand over a rape suspect arrested by the community to the Police for proper investigation.
Wiro made the call following the arrest of one Mr. Isaac at Off Transformer Junction, Psychiatric Road, around Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor LGA on Sunday night, May 18, 2026, over allegations of sexual assault involving his stepdaughter and daughter.
According to the activist, available information suggests that the suspect was apprehended by the community youths after neighbours reportedly raised alarm over the alleged rape incidents.
He disclosed that he contacted the President of the Rumuomoi Youth body, Collins Nkoro, who confirmed the arrest and stated that the community had commenced an investigation into the matter.
Wiro, however, maintained that community groups, vigilantes and youth bodies do not possess the constitutional authority to investigate sexual assault cases, insisting that such matters should be handled strictly by law enforcement agencies.
He therefore urged the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Rumupeirikom Police Division and other relevant authorities to ensure the suspect is transferred to the Police without delay to enable a thorough investigation aimed at establishing the truth of the allegations against him.
