Bauchi State governor Senator Bala Mohammed, has commissioned 2,187 personnel of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Forest Security Services (BSVFSS), authorising them to begin operations to strengthen surveillance and protect the state’s forests and natural resources.
Speaking at the passing-out parade and commissioning at the Police Training School, Yelwa on Saturday, the governor represented by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, said the recruits are now authorised to operate under existing laws and regulations.
Governor Bala Mohammed said the move reflects his administration’s commitment to sustainable forest management, environmental conservation and enhanced community security.
He described forests as vital to agriculture, livelihoods, biodiversity and the state’s socio-economic development, and warned that illegal logging, poaching and indiscriminate tree felling increasingly threaten those resources.
He also noted that criminals often use forests as hideouts for unlawful activities.
“Recognising these challenges, the State Government approved the recruitment of 2,187 Forest Guards,” the governor said, adding that the programme also creates employment opportunities for youths. He said the recruits’ rigorous training has equipped them with the discipline and skills required for effective performance.
The governor urged the guards to see their role as custodians of the environment and defenders of the state’s natural heritage, and to perform with professionalism, loyalty and courage while adhering strictly to rules of engagement. He stressed that misconduct, collusion with criminals or abuse of office would not be tolerated.
He called for close collaboration between the Forest Guards, security agencies, local communities and traditional institutions to achieve the corps’ objectives.
Bauchi State Police Commissioner CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, represented by DCP Musa M. Bulus, said the recruits are now on record as trained personnel and will be held to higher standards of conduct and performance. He urged discipline, commitment to protecting lives and property, and respect for human rights.
Earlier, Police Training School Commandant ACP Abdullahi Umar Tambuwal, said the recruits received an intensive two-week course covering civilian security operations, intelligence gathering, community policing, critical asset protection, operational collaboration, health and safety awareness, and emergency response.
