CACOL Commends DSS, Judiciary Over Conviction Of Owo Church Massacre Masterminds

LAGOS  – The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has commended the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Judiciary for their professionalism, diligence, and commitment to justice in the successful investigation, prose­cution, and conviction of those found culpable in the horrific massacre that occurred at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

CACOL’s Chairman, Debo Adeniran, in a statement signed by Tola Oresanwo, the organisa­tion’s Director of Administration and Programmes, stated that the sentencing of the masterminds to death by hanging represented a significant victory for justice.

Adeniran also said the judg­ment was a reassurance that those who engage in acts of ter­rorism and mass murder would ultimately face the full weight of the law.

He stressed that the judgment had restored a measure of confi­dence in the ability of Nigeria’s security and judicial institutions to deliver justice, even in the most difficult and emotionally charged cases.

CACOL therefore called on the governor of Ondo State to expedite action on the signing of the death warrants of the convicted persons in accordance with the law, so that the judgment of the court could be carried out without unnecessary delay.

It stated: “Justice delayed, par­ticularly in cases involving hei­nous crimes against humanity, weakens public confidence in the criminal justice system.

“The prompt execution of lawful court judgments will send a strong signal that terror­ism, mass killings, and violent crimes have severe consequenc­es and will serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar acts.

“While commending this achievement, CACOL express­es grave concern over the re­cent abduction of teachers and students in Oyo State by armed bandits.

“We call on the Federal Gov­ernment, security agencies, and all relevant authorities to inten­sify efforts towards the immedi­ate rescue and safe return of the victims.

“Every passing day in cap­tivity exposes innocent citi­zens to unimaginable trauma and danger. Government must demonstrate the same level of determination that led to the successful prosecution of the Owo massacre suspects in secur­ing the release of these abducted Nigerians.
