Police Launch Manhunt As Teacher Dies After Alleged Assault For Disciplining Pupil

The Kogi State Police Command has launched a manhunt for three suspects following the death of a 30-year-old primary school teacher, Maryam Usman, who allegedly died after being assaulted for disciplining a pupil.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 18 at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the case of culpable homicide was reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25.

According to Afusat, preliminary investigations revealed that one Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked the teacher over the punishment she had given a pupil.

“The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on June 25, 2026,” the statement read.

Afusat said detectives visited both the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence after the case was reported, while all necessary documentation was carried out.

She added that arrangements were being made to move the deceased’s body to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for an autopsy.

The police spokesperson said the three suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest them.

“Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” she said.
