The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday convicted and sentenced three terrorists to death by hanging over terrorism-related offences.
The convicts were sentenced during the ongoing mass trial of terrorism suspects at the Federal High Court in Abuja after pleading guilty to charges filed against them by the Federal Government.
Naijaonpoint understands that those sentenced to death are Danladi Lawal, Abdullahi Mohammed and Mohammed Gulama Shaibu.
Lawal, 33, also known as Dankawu, was sentenced by Justice James Omotosho after pleading guilty to a five-count charge.
The court sentenced him to 30 years’ imprisonment on count one, 15 years on count two, life imprisonment on count three, death by hanging on count four and life imprisonment on count five.
“May God have mercy on you,” Justice Omotosho told the convict.
In the charge marked FHC/KNJ/CR/956/2026, the Federal Government, through the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), accused Lawal and others at large of abducting an elderly man in Maikaho village, Jibya Local Government Area of Katsina State, in 2020.
The victim was allegedly detained for four days in a bush hideout at Ilela, while the abductors demanded ₦950,000 ransom from his family.
The offence was said to have caused fear and insecurity in the community and was brought under the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act 2013.
Lawal was also said to have received ₦450,000 as part of the ransom proceeds.
Justice Salim Ibrahim also sentenced Abdullahi Mohammed and Mohammed Gulama Shaibu to death by hanging after they pleaded guilty to separate terrorism charges.
Mohammed pleaded guilty to a one-count charge marked FHC/KNJ/CR/245/2026.
Shaibu pleaded guilty to a two-count charge marked FHC/KNJ/CR/329/2026 and was sentenced to death on count one and life imprisonment on count two.
Justice Ibrahim also sentenced Mohammed Dezami Sherife to life imprisonment on counts two, six and eight of a 10-count charge after he pleaded guilty.
In a related case, Justice Omotosho sentenced Shamsudeen Muhammad Ibrahim, also known as Abu Harira, to life imprisonment on one count and 35 years’ imprisonment on another count.
Ibrahim was accused of supporting ISWAP by receiving training and sermons linked to terrorist activities.
He was also convicted for failing to disclose information about the activities of ISWAP and Ansaru to law enforcement or security agencies.
Justice Emeka Nwite also sentenced Lawi Abubakar Mohammed to 20 years’ imprisonment each on two counts after he pleaded guilty.
The judge ordered that the sentences should run consecutively, making a total of 40 years.
He further directed that the convict be rehabilitated and deradicalised after serving his prison term before being released back into society.
