The Delta State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement exercise targeting vehicles operating without registration number plates and those with concealed, altered, defaced or unreadable registration numbers.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Asaba.
According to Edafe, the exercise follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olatunji Disu, mandating that all vehicles be properly registered and display clearly visible registration number plates at all times.
He said the initiative is aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening the capacity of law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles, prevent crime and apprehend offenders.
“Vehicles without registration number plates or those deliberately concealed pose a significant security risk, as they are often difficult to trace and may be exploited by criminal elements to evade detection,” he said.
Edafe urged motorists to remove any device, sticker, frame, cover or material that obstructs the visibility of their registration numbers and to regularise vehicles operating without valid registration plates.
He said the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Olufemi Abaniwonda, had directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders and patrol teams to ensure strict compliance with the directive across the state.
According to him, any vehicle found without approved registration plates or with tampered registration details will be stopped, impounded and subjected to appropriate legal procedures in line with existing laws.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that the commissioner of police had tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to coordinate and monitor the exercise.
CP Abaniwonda urged them to ensure its effective implementation statewide.
Edafe reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive policing measures aimed at maintaining law and order.
He called on residents and motorists to cooperate with law enforcement officers and comply with vehicle registration regulations in the interest of public safety and security. (NAN) (nannews.com.ng)
