Egypt booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 for the first time in history after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran in Seattle, while Team Melli were left heartbroken by a late VAR decision that denied them what looked like a famous winner.
The match exploded into life early on. Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt the lead in the fifth minute before Iran missed a golden opportunity to level when Mehdi Taremi’s penalty was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.
Iran responded moments later as Ramin Rezaeian smashed home the rebound after Shobeir had initially denied Milad Mohammadi.
For much of the contest, neither side could find the breakthrough, but the closing stages produced one of the tournament’s most dramatic finishes.
Iran thought they had sealed qualification deep into stoppage time when veteran defender Shoja Khalilzadeh bundled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations among players and coaching staff. The draw, coupled with Belgium’s emphatic 5-1 victory over New Zealand, ensured Egypt finished second in Group G and earned a last-32 meeting with Australia. Iran, meanwhile, finished the group stage with three consecutive draws and must now wait to see if their record is enough to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Egypt also face an injury concern ahead of the knockout stage after captain Mohamed Salah asked to be substituted just before the hour mark.
Coach Hossam Hassan revealed the forward felt some discomfort but expressed confidence that the former Liverpool star would recover in time for the clash with Australia.
Beyond the football, the atmosphere around Seattle Stadium reflected the emotions surrounding the fixture.
Egyptian supporters celebrated a landmark achievement with songs and dancing, while Iranian fans applauded their team’s spirited display despite the disappointment.
Outside the stadium, anti-government demonstrations involving some Iranian activists created tense moments, leading to brief confrontations with supporters of the national team before police intervened.
Inside the ground, however, many Egyptian and Iranian fans exchanged photographs, chanted for their countries, and embraced the spirit of the World Cup.
Palestinian flags were visible throughout the stadium, with several fans using the occasion to call for peace amid ongoing global conflicts.
Others carried banners honouring victims of war, reminding everyone that football often reflects stories beyond the pitch.
In the end, it was Egypt celebrating a historic milestone, while Iran were left wondering what might have been after one of the most dramatic finishes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.
