As part of its objective of reducing hunger in society, the Elitist Shift Foundation has fed hundreds of children as part of activities to mark the 2026 Children’s Day in Lagos.
On the day, children from different schools and diverse backgrounds gathered to dance, play, drink and play games in an atmosphere of peaceful conviviality.
There were talks on team work, respect for teachers and parents and other adults.
The child children were also taught to believe in themselves and the virtues of hard work and self-confidence.
They were told that they could achieve more if they collaborate and help each other.
They were taught not to waste their time and value and use the opportunities that come their way.
Speaking at the event, the founder of Dr. Taiwo Adejumo, said that she organized the event to fulfil the aim of the foundation which is to “nurture children’s body, soul and spirit.”
According to her, the Elitist Shift Foundation started about 15 years ago out of a cry in her heart and a burden that the elite were not doing enough for society.
Lady Adejumo said that the Nigerian elite spent millions of naira on luxury cars, houses and mansions and parties while millions of the lower end of society do have enough to eat and live in squalid conditions, adding that it was the burden to make see the need to lift up the poor and needy that made to establish the foundation.
“I see people in dirt. I see homeless people. I see beggars on the streets and I was moved and wanted to change the situation,” she said.
Dr Adejumo, who is the chairperson of a summit under the Institute for National Transformation, said her heart is very close to a positive change in national development.
However, she stated that it’s frustrating because the elite do not want to change, adding that they want to focus on enjoying themselves and other members of society to wallow in poverty.
“The elite need to have a change of heart if the elite do the right thing in their spheres of influence like media, art and entertainment, education and others, Nigeria will be a better place” she stated.
She called on the government to devote more resources in order to give the children better education.
Also speaking at the event, Okunola Ayodeji, from the Co-Curricular Department, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, lauded Dr Adejumo for organizing an event where children could come in and play and relax.
He praised the founder of the foundation for creating an environment where children could learn and relax, hoping that such an environment could be created in classrooms in Lagos State.
He thanked her for feeding the children and giving them a sense of belonging.
In her remarks, Mrs. Foluke Adeniji, the head of session of Social Mobilisation, Local Government Education Authority, Ikeja, said that the event provided an opportunity for children from diverse backgrounds to meet and interact.
