At least five passengers were confirmed dead and more than 40 others injured on Monday following a tragic train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor in Agbor, Delta State.
The accident occurred in the early hours of the day when a passenger train travelling from Warri towards Itakpe derailed, causing four coaches to overturn and leaving scores of passengers trapped or injured.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that five victims died instantly, while emergency responders and local residents worked together to evacuate injured passengers to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Videos and photographs circulating on social media showed several train coaches lying on their sides after leaving the tracks. Rescue efforts were seen ongoing as officials and volunteers searched the wreckage and assisted survivors.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about rail safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest standard-gauge railway routes, which connects communities across Delta, Edo, and Kogi states and serves thousands of passengers annually.
In a statement issued shortly after the accident, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment and said emergency response teams had been deployed to the scene.
“The Corporation is closely monitoring developments, and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available,” Opeifa said.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and rely on official channels for verified information regarding the incident.
Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of the derailment, while investigations are expected to commence immediately to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Rail transport stakeholders and safety experts have called for a thorough inquiry into the incident, stressing the need for continuous investment in railway infrastructure, maintenance, operational safety, and emergency preparedness to prevent similar occurrences.
The Warri–Itakpe railway line, commissioned to facilitate passenger and freight movement across Nigeria’s central transport corridor, has become a critical component of the country’s rail modernization programme.
As rescue operations continue and families seek information about affected passengers, attention is now focused on the outcome of the official investigation and measures that may be introduced to strengthen rail safety across the national network.
