Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has sparked reactions after dismissing widespread claims of severe hunger and economic hardship in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV Prime Time on Tuesday night, Onanuga said he does not personally see the level of hunger many Nigerians have continued to complain about despite the country’s current economic challenges.
According to him, the Federal Government has taken major steps to improve workers’ welfare, particularly through the increase in the national minimum wage.
“I have people working for me privately and i ask them questions about how they’re surviving and adjusting. This government has increased minimum wage by more than 100%.”
The presidential aide argued that while economic difficulties exist, the government has made efforts aimed at cushioning the effects of recent reforms.
His comments come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with rising inflation, increasing food prices, transportation costs, and high living expenses following major policy changes introduced by the Tinubu administration.
Since the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023 and the floating of the naira, the cost of living has risen sharply across the country. Prices of essential commodities, including rice, beans, bread, and cooking gas, have climbed significantly, putting pressure on households and businesses.
Despite repeated assurances from the Federal Government that economic reforms will yield long-term benefits, concerns over worsening hardship have remained a major issue among citizens.
