A civil society group, the Arewa Youths Advocate for Good Governance (AYAGG), has raised concerns over an imminent mass retirement of senior management officers within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), warning that it could trigger a severe leadership vacuum and disrupt national economic reforms.
The group made the call during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, June 26, 2026, led by its National Coordinator, Comrade Adamu Muhammad Abdullahi.
Addressing journalists, Abdullahi emphasised that the simultaneous exit of top-ranking customs officials poses a direct threat to the country’s fiscal stability and border security.
He noted that the NCS has become one of the Federal Government’s most vital revenue-generating institutions, especially under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms.
According to the group, a sudden loss of experienced leadership could slow down customs modernisation programmes, hinder digital transformation initiatives, and compromise ongoing anti-smuggling operations.
Describing the situation as a critical national economic concern rather than a mere administrative issue, AYAGG appealed to President Tinubu to urgently intervene.
The group urged the Presidency, the National Security establishment, and the Federal Ministry of Finance to halt irreversible decisions until a comprehensive impact assessment is conducted.
To mitigate the impending crisis, the youth group recommended measures to include phased transitions to stagger the retirement of essential management staff, retention of expertise by preserving critical institutional knowledge where legally permissible and strategic succession planning driven by national interest rather than rigid administrative timelines.
AYAGG clarified that its advocacy is entirely neutral and aimed solely at protecting the efficiency of Nigeria’s economic architecture.
“We are not advocating for individuals. We are advocating for institutional continuity,” Abdullahi stated. He concluded by reaffirming the group’s confidence in President Tinubu’s commitment to institutional reforms, adding that the stability of strategic agencies remains the foundation of national development” The group stated.
