The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has raised serious concern over what he described as growing moral decadence and rising social vices in society, warning that the trend poses a major challenge that requires urgent collective action.
The Police Commissioner made the remarks while reacting to the tragic death of a 25-year-old female student in Onitsha, whose death is being treated as a suspected suicide case.
According to the Police Command, the victim was discovered on June 18, 2026, under circumstances suggesting suicide. A note believed to have been written by the deceased was reportedly recovered at the scene, containing disturbing claims linked to a failed relationship and allegations that she had undergone three abortions for a man identified only as Chigozie.
CP Orutugu noted that while investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, the development highlights the urgent need for stronger parental guidance, proper moral upbringing, and improved emotional support systems for young people.
He stressed that parents and guardians must become more involved in the lives of their children and wards by paying closer attention to their emotional well-being, social interactions, and behavioural patterns.
According to him, many social challenges confronting society today can be reduced through effective parenting, open communication, and the promotion of sound moral values.
The Police Commissioner also urged community leaders, schools, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to intensify advocacy and mentorship programmes aimed at promoting responsible living, resilience, and positive values among youths.
Meanwhile, CP Orutugu has directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive and discreet investigation.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while collaborating with stakeholders to address emerging social concerns affecting public safety and societal well-being.
